The United States is the world's largest goods and services exporter. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. exports reached nearly $2.5 trillion in 2014. International trade is vital to our economy and offers significant opportunities. Why? Ninety-five percent of the world's population lives beyond our borders and almost 40 million American jobs depend on trade.
Although international trade is considered to be the domain of large corporations, almost 98% of U.S. exporters are small businesses—nearly 300,000—one out of every 100 U.S. companies. Small and medium-sized businesses play an important role in exporting goods and services through job creation, and Hispanic-owned businesses are uniquely positioned to benefit from increased exporting opportunities. Within the small-business sector overall, Hispanic businesses comprise the fastest-growing segment. Because of cultural and language identity, Hispanic-owned businessses should pay closer attention to Latin America and the Iberian Penninsula in venturing overseas to create new markets for their firms. Moreover, businesses should take advantage of organizations such as the MAHCC as well as government agencies such as the U.S. Commerce Department and international trade visits in order to capitalize on the varied opportunities that international trade offers to U.S. businesses.
In order to help small business take advantage of export opportunities, the National Export Initiative was created to encourage agencies, including the U.S. Commercial Service and the U.S. Export-Import Bank to assist small businesses in accessing international markets. Outreach programs by the Export-Import Bank are also being expanded.
The MAHCC supports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in its recommendations that:
- The United States should redouble its export promotion efforts to expand the universe of companies that benefit from international trade.
- U.S. export promotion programs should center on America's small and medium-sized businesses, which account for the vast majority of all exporters.
- The U.S. Export-Import Bank should continue its efforts to help small businesses export.
