About

The Evolution of Tradition is presented with Executive Chef Javier Romero introducing a new approach to some classic tapas. From old school tapas battling it out to healthy & organic salads, there's something for everyone. With 23 years of experience, and a young team bringing innovative techniques, we continue to show the best our culture has to offer. Named the best Spanish restaurant outside of Spain by Esquire magazine in 2010, Taverna del Alabardero regularly plays host from dignitaries to diplomats, young executives to local residents, we welcome everyone as if they were coming into our home. Since 1974, Grupo Lezama has operated in Spain, beginning in Madrid, followed by other establishments of the group in Marbella, Seville and Basque Country, as well as a prestigious culinary school in Seville.

Since 1989 Taberna quickly garnered high praise and a legion of acolytes, fast forward 21 years later executive Chef Javier Romero continues to carry the torch that was established. While the restaurant regularly plays host to diplomats and dignitaries, all of our guests are special, and we welcome you as we would into our own homes. Lezama’s hope and goal for his Washington restaurant is to demonstrate the rich diversity of Spanish cooking, a European cuisine with an abundance of regional specialties. Now, with a new generation settled in, Taberna del Alabardero continues to provide traditional Spanish cuisine while incorporating freshness and creativity.

In addition to the main dining area which can accommodate up to 90 guests seated and 120 for a Cocktail Reception, three other dining rooms provide outstanding settings for more intimate events:

  • La Granja - Beautiful Semi-Private Room has a view into the Chefs Kitchen and Wine Cellar area that can accommodate up to 28 guests at one table or 48 guests for a seated lunch/dinner and 60 guests for a Cocktail Reception.
  • Aranjuez - This lovely Private Room can accommodate up to 22 guests at one table and 30 guests for a Cocktail Reception.
  • Amalur - This quaint and quiet Room also known as the Library, can accommodate up to 10 guests at one table.

In an effort to present the most up to date products, we carefully select the most vanguard of wines for an exquisite experience that is capable of bringing you an elite representation from only the best Spanish wineries. Our Sommelier, Gustavo Iniesta, was titled by the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid, and presents over 300 Spanish wines for your enjoyment.

La Taverna del Alabardero - Esquire
John Mariani, Esquire | December 22, 2010

A decade ago it was easy enough to contend that if you wanted the best French food you'd go to France, the best Italian food you'd go to Italy, and the best Japanese food you'd go to Japan. But if the last ten years have shown gastronomes anything, it's that food the equal of any in the world is now to be found in the USA. And not just in New York or San Francisco. Cities like Chicago, Houston, Washington, and Boston have enormous breadth and depth in many ethnic categories.

La Taverna del Alabardero - DC magazine

“It’s refreshing.” That’s what my friend remarked after five courses of Spanish gluttony within the hushed plushness of Taberna del Alabardero, the most anachronistic restaurant in town and easily among the most transporting. Refreshing? When’s the last time a 10,000-calorie feast in a 22-year-old restaurant felt refreshing? But it was—and that’s a warning to all those new acrobatic restaurants out there desperately trying to fly high.
